Saving Money in Charlotte

By Addie Rising, About.com

Saving money is never a bad thing, especially in the current economic climate. If you live in Charlotte or are just passing through here are some tips on saving a few bucks here and there around the Queen City.

Dining

Kids Eat Free
Charlotte is a family-friendly city with many restaurants offering free or discounted meals for children on designated nights. In my family, dining out on these evenings easily saves us $5-$10 depending on where we go.

Charlotte Restaurant Week
Held one week in the summer and one week in the winter, Charlotte Restaurant Week offers up fine dining for a fraction of the price. Over 50 of Charlotte's best restaurants participate in this twice-yearly event serving up spectacular 3-course, prix fixe dinners for $30 per person.

Restaurant.com
Restaurant.com provides gift certificates to area restaurants at a discounted price. I have paid $10 and received $25 gift certificates to Maria Bonita, one of my favorite places for Mexican food. There usually are minimum purchase requirements, but the savings are worth it.

Getting Around

Find the Cheapest Gas
With many SUVs and minivans on the road in Charlotte, filling up a gas tank is no small feat. However, there is no need to feel jilted at the pump. Take a look at this guide to conserving fuel and finding the best gas prices in the Charlotte area.

Entertainment

Charlotte Citipass
One thing is for certain every September in Charlotte: Someone you know will have a child selling Citipass books for a school fundraiser. The books provide coupons for restaurants and services all over Charlotte. However, the books contain coupons for locations as far north as Lake Norman and as far south as Ballantyne. But you can always find someone in another part of town to swap with on Craig's List.
