Originally called the "Charlotte Christmas Festival," the Belk Carolinas' Carrousel Parade started in 1947, and is one of the largest celebrations in Charlotte. It's the fourth largest Thanksgiving Day parade in the United States, and over 100,000 people will descend on Uptown to join in the fun. The largest crowd on record was in 1950, when 500,000 packed the streets of downtown to watch popular cowboy star Hopalong Cassidy lead the parade.

2011 saw over 110 entries participate in the parade, including area marching bands, floats sponsored by local organizations and corporations, step and drill teams, entertainers and many more.

From music to sports to arts to culture, there are always plenty of festivals happening around town. Click here for a month by month calendar of festivals in Charlotte. Know of a festival we don't have listed? Let me know at charlotte@aboutguide.com.
