Charlotte's Southern Football League Team Wouldn't Last Long

By , About.com Guide

The Charlotte Vikings were established in 1965, and played as a part of the Southern Football League. Their home games were played at Memorial Stadium. Local legend Will Campagna was their head coach. The team lasted just one year, ending their season with about $25,000 in debt, and almost no support.

Coach Campagna was probably the best thing associated with the Vikings. He would go on to have a very well-respected high school coaching career (ironically, with the North Mecklenburg Vikings), and he would be inducted into the N.C. Football Coaches Association's hall of fame.

The 1965 season began in early July and ended in early October. Twelve games were schedule, among teams that include the Atlanta Mustangs, Knoxville Bears, Mobile Martians, Chattanooga Cherokees, a team from Huntsville, Jacksonville Robins, Orlando Thunderbirds, and of course, the Charlotte Vikings.

Expect for a brief mention in the Jul 4, 1965 Daytona Beach Morning Journal that the Florida Thunderbirds were opening the season against the Vikings in the "Tangerine Bowl," almost no published information exists on this franchise.
