Aviation Museum to Display NASA Artifacts

By January 21, 2013

As part of a program to ensure that historical artifacts and saved and displayed appropriately, the Carolinas Aviation Museum will be accepting a gift from NASA - an emergency escape basket (used to rapidly remove astronauts from the launch pad in event of trouble). NASA is sending selected artifacts to prominent museums across the country, and the basket will be part of the museum's permanent collection. A few more items are headed Charlotte's way, including a production model of the Hubble Space Telescope, an astronaut survival kit and a one-third scale model of the Apollo command module from the moon program. Those items are just on loan, though.

The museum has rapidly evolved in the last few years and even months - from acquisition of the "Miracle on the Hudson" plane to affiliation with the Smithsonian.
