While I'm sure many living here might disagree these days, Forbes magazine ranked Charlotte as the 17th best city to live cheaply. Forbes surveyed over 300 statistical metro areas to determine the ranking and considered such factors as crime rate, unemployment, average salary and culture index. The suburbs of Concord and Gastonia were counted as part of Charlotte's metro area which may have affected the numbers.

North Carolina's Durham-Chapel Hill area ranked No. 8 overall.
